Our Story

How it started

Dice & Drizzle started in 2019 when Guðrún Björnsdóttir and Einar Magnússon realized Reykjavik had plenty of bars and coffee shops but nowhere to sit for three hours over a board game without someone asking you to order another drink or leave. They gutted a former wool shop on Laugavegur, lined the walls with custom birchwood shelves, and started stacking. The collection hit 400 games by opening week. Today there are over 1,200, organized by genre, each one played and annotated by staff. The felt-lined dice trays were Einar's idea because he got tired of chasing runaway d20s across hardwood floors. The brass call bell shaped like a twenty-sided die was Guðrún's, because she thought a cafe should have at least one object that makes people smile before they even sit down. Pay by the hour, drink what you want, stay until closing.

The founders

G

Guðrún Björnsdóttir

Co-founder — Game curator

Guðrún is the reason the shelves are organized by feel rather than alphabetically. She keeps a worn d20 on her desk, rolls it when she can't choose between two new acquisitions, and says the dice have never steered her wrong. She sources games from publishers across Europe and writes the shelf notes by hand.

Einar Magnússon

Co-founder — Operations

Einar built the booking system himself one December weekend and has been quietly improving it ever since. His dice tray — a piece of walnut he turned on a borrowed lathe — lives on the front counter. He is the one who makes sure the hot chocolate is always exactly 68 degrees.
